9 May 2025 - An the invitation of Dominica Manole, President of the Constitutional Court of Moldova, the presiding Court of the European Conference of Constitutional Courts, and Havier Cremades, President of the World Law Association and World Law Foundation, President Dr Šeparović attended the World Law Congress, which took place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, from 4 to 6 May 2025.
The organiser, the World Law Association, gathered numerous participants, presidents and judges of constitutional and supreme courts, international experts, global leaders, law professors, attorneys and other experts who discussed the implementation of the rule of law in the various panels. President Šeparović took part in the panel on the independence of judiciary, ethical code and enforcement of constitutional values and spoke about the role of the Croatian Constitutional Court in protecting independence and autonomy of the judicial power. He first emphasised that the principle of the separation of powers and the independence and autonomy of judiciary are among the fundamental principles of the Croatian constitutional order and prerequisites for the realisation of the rule of law. Through the relevant case-law he presented the most important views of the Constitutional Court on the topic. Gonçalo de Almeida Ribeiro, Vice-President of the Constitutional Court of Portugal, Petr Angyalossy, President of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic, Napoleón Estévez Lavandier, President Magistrate of the Constitutional Court and Edgardo Cáceres Castellanos, Magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice of Honduras and Vice President of the National Academy of Law of Honduras, also took part in this panel discussion, which was chaired by Dr Stephan Harbarth, President of the Federal Constitutional Court.
During the closing ceremony, Felipe VI, King of Spain, presented the World Peace and Liberty Award to Hon. Sonia Sotomayor, Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of America. This award has already been presented to Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mendela, Felipe VI King of Spain, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the European Commission. The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, and the President of the German Federal Constitutional Court, Dr Stephan Harbarth, also addressed the audience.
